Replacing a Garbage Disposal in Your Kitchen
If your garbage disposal has let you down for the last time, it needs to be replaced. If replacing a disposal is something you do not want to try, Dun-RIGHT Plumbing & Heating can do the job for you. Replacing a garbage disposal is a plumbing repair that is generally considered a DIY job. As with all DIY jobs, it can prove to be a challenge.
Unplug the power cord and turn the water supply line off. Note the size of the current garbage disposal. Measure the inside space if the cabinet area is small. Purchase the same sized unit at the DIY store. The sizes are given in horsepower such as ½, 1/3 and so forth. One-third hp is sufficient for most households.
Begin the process of removing the old disposal. Remove all the plumbing fittings. This can be difficult if it has rust, scale or other problems. Remove the retaining ring. Tap gently with a hammer if necessary and use an oil-based lubricant if necessary. With the ring removed, unscrew the drain fitting from inside the sink. Hold the disposal while doing this. Carefully remove the disposal; it will be heavy. Remove the power cord and use it on the new unit.
Perform the garbage disposal installation of the new unit in the reverse order. Install the drain and the dishwasher drain fittings. Ensure plumber’s putty is used under the drain fitting. This prevents any leaks from the sink onto the unit. Install the power cord properly and use electrical caps on the wire connections.
Run water in the disposal to ensure there are no leaks. If there are, stop and fix them. When no leaks are seen, plug the unit in and turn it on. Ensure the water is running first; never run a garbage disposal dry.
